Disclaimer: the author is my boss, but I read the first Top 3 book before I ever worked with him so this review is not completely loaded and I was NOT promised a good resident evaluation for writing this... (although I bet I'll get one! just kidding)If you liked the first Top 3 book, then you will probably love this book. I wish it had gotten published when I was still a first year resident because just like the first book, the whole focus is on making a finding, putting that finding into a gamut, making a list of your top differentials, and then trying to hone down in on a diagnosis using the unique characteristics that your case may have. This style makes sense to me and when you are just learning radiology, it really is the best way (in my opinion) to build that foundation of knowledge you need to continue to learn rads.It honestly is a perfect book for residents because it doesn't get into the weeds and you can definitely read the whole thing during a 4-week rotation which I struggle to do with a lot of textbooks on a lot of different rotations. It also has a natural format with three sections: Brain, Head/Neck and Spine and then good subsections within each of these. I think neuro and MSK are the two hardest sections for residents (at least for me) and this will definitely help you organize your thoughts and future reading better than anything else that is out there.I have the Kindle version. If the publisher would add the hyperlinks to the index by key findings section, it would be even better. They did this for the first Top 3 book, and it's a great tool when you're on-call. For instance, if you have a posterior fossa mass in a kid and you've read this book but want to real quickly brush up on that topic, you just flip to the index, look for the case where the key finding is "posterior fossa mass in pediatric patient," click on the hyperlink, and booya you're right there reading. The way it is right now, you have to find the case number and then swipe frantically to get to that case. I think it's a quick fix and once they do that then I will have no problems.I haven't taken the new CORE exam yet (pretty soon though!) so I will probably update this review afterwards to speak if it is a must-read while your studying for your boards.UPDATE Post-CORE exam:This is mostly in response to Sanders. I would still highly recommend this book. While this book is not specifically written for CORE exam prep, it definitely can only help you do well on the neuro section. You know how baseball players swing 2 or 3 bats before they go to the plate so that the single bat feels lighter when they are at the plate?? This book is like swinging 3 bats before you take the CORE exam. This is NOT a book for reviewing basic anatomy though, so make you are doing that because the ABR does like to ask neuroanatomy questions. The breadth and depth are more for a fellowship level trainee or a senior resident going into a fellowship, but you definitely can read this book within a month or so. I think 3rd and 4th year residents should read through it on their last couple neuro rotations.
